The Reconciliation Government has approved a move to impose additional taxes on certain goods such as airline tickets, cigarettes, mobile phones and cement.
According to some Yemeni economists, the tax increase will translate into higher costs for goods, which will increase citizens’ suffering. Economist Abdulhakeem Thabet condemned the additional increase and also stated that the decision was illogical.
“The government must fight corruption and make good use of grants and loans to provide finances for the Social Care Fund,” said Thabet.
He also advised the government to use the $100 million grant provided by the International Bank, since it had issued to aid such causes.
