For the first time, a women’s wedding party will be held in Sana’a without a single stalk of qat. The wedding, which will be held on August 19, has already been nicknamed “Our Wedding Will Be Without Qat.” The bride, who had the idea, said she wants to break custom and hold a wedding in her own way. She even included in the invitation letter “If you’re coming, don’t bring qat.” Many young men last year held wedding parties without qat, and they similarly told their guests not to bring or chew qat at their event. The idea is spreading, and VIPs and political persons have participated in this initiative. Many local CSOs are working to educate people on the dangers to health and finances posed by qat and the qat trade.
