Mr. Sotomine proved an uneasy target for the kidnappers in his violent resistance to their kidnapping attempt. Despite being stabbed four times and having his vehicle stolen, the criminals failed in their ultimate mission.
A rise in kidnapping has been one of the consequences of the poor security situation in Yemen. This event took place four days after the Japanese government donated $5.6 million USD to help Yemen fight hunger.
The consular officer was admitted to the hospital for medical treatment. The government of Japan has not commented on the case.
Japan is a member of the Friends of Yemen organization.
