New York- The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi, President of the Republic of Yemen.
The Secretary-General expressed his extreme concern over the increasing number of civilian casualties, especially as a result of airstrikes, and the increasingly massive humanitarian crisis. He called on the Government to use its influence with its partners and do its utmost to protect civilians and to alleviate the human suffering of all Yemenis.
He re-emphasized his firm view that no military solution to the conflict exists, and that peace can only be achieved through political negotiations. He stressed that all parties must immediately stop the fighting, agree on a comprehensive cease-fire, and engage in direct UN-brokered talks without preconditions and delay.
The Secretary-General further emphasized that the Government should ensure that all delivery routes into Yemen, including airports and seaports, must be open to enable greater access for humanitarian supplies and commercial imports.
