Catherine Ashton

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and SecurityPolicy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:”I remain very concerned at the situation in Yemen, where violent incidents are becoming a daily occurrence. More than ever, a peaceful political transition is now urgent.I welcome Vice President Hadi’s intention to invite the ruling party and the opposition to cometogether and reach agreement. It is significant that he has been granted the power to sign on President Saleh’s behalf. The key components are already there. The Gulf Cooperation Councilinitiative and other international and Yemeni-led efforts have set them out: early elections; aGovernment of National Unity; and security arrangements which will provide stability across thewhole country, which will be vital in the period leading up to a vote. I support all efforts that willlead to the rapid signing of an Agreement.I shall work closely in the coming weeks with the EU Member States and with partners from the international community, to offer support for a constructive Yemeni political process, which meetsthe aspirations and needs of the Yemeni people.”
