The Al-Qaeda terrorist organization has claimed responsibility for the assassination of Salem Qaten, commander of the military’s southern forces, last Monday morning in Aden governorate.
According to the BBC, the terrorist organization stated the suicide bomber who killed Ba-Qaten was Somali, and also that the operation was an act of revenge for the military campaign launched against Al-Qaeda in Abyan governorate.
“We are to launch similar operations targeting Yemeni officials within the coming days,” stated Al-Qaeda officials in a statement.
The suicide bomber wore an explosive belt and targeted the commander outside his house in Aden governorate, killing the military commander and leaving four of his companions wounded.
Qaten was given his post last March. Considered to be one of Yemen’s few efficient military leaders, his assassination has been widely condemned.
