Egyptian authorities in Cairo have announced new visa requirements for Yemeni travelers to the country. Security sources at the Cairo Airport said that security approval for any visa application is a must. The source said that Egyptian security forces have informed all airline companies on the importance of the visa in any and all Yemeni passports. Travelers can apply for an Egypitan visa through the embassy in Sana’a and or its Consulates. “Any passenger who does not apply for the visa be prevented from entering the country, and all travelers without visas will be sent back home at the expense of the airline company “said the source. More than 35 Yemeni travelers were sent back home at the time that the decree was first implemented.
The source said that the decree has caused a sharp decrease in passenger traffic from Yemen to Egypt. Some airline companies reimbursed customer expenditures after reducing ticket prices. The decree came as a result of the ongoing revolution, some of whose members are now calling for the ousted President to return to power. Yemeni and Egypt enjoyed a mutual free-travel relationship, in which visas were free for Yemenis traveling to Egypt. Although this structure was in place for decades, Yemenis will now find themselves in line at the Egyptian visa office before any trip across the Red Sea. The government of Yemen has not applied the same requirements for Egyptians considering visits to Yemen. Such a transition would saddle the Egyptian government with losses double what the Yemeni government will incur, because Yemenis are drawn to Egypt in large numbers every year for tourism, business, medical treatment and education. Egyptians visit Yemen in much smaller numbers, and almost exclusively for religious or work issues
