Ms Bishop told Sky News the Department of Trade and Foreign Affairs is working to ascertain information.
‘We do understand that an Australian who has been in Yemen for some time has been kidnapped, but we don’t know the details,’ she said.
‘We are seeking to provide consular suport to his family to keep them informed of as much as we know.’
The process of gathering information has been made difficult by civil war and no Australian embassy in the Middle Eastern country.
‘We don’t have a diplomatic presence in Yemen so we’re having to rely on partners and others to assist us in trying to find out what actually happened,’ Ms Bishop said.
Both the United Kingdom and the United States have embassies in Yemen.
